“The spiritual life is part of the human essence. It is a defining characteristic of human nature,
without which human nature is not fully human.”
– Abraham Maslow
Become aware of how your faith shapes your identity…
Whether you believe in God is a vital part of your identity. This shapes many questions that influence the way you live.
As humans, our limitations cause us to wrestle with questions regarding our origin, purpose, suffering, and hope.
Faith has largely been choked out of our modern-day world. Popular worldviews can predominate the thinking that you are uneducated or bigoted for believing in something outside of yourself.
Now, faith and science are considered different paradigms.
This split has impacted the field of psychology, as many therapists have difficulty respecting both God and the human experience. Dating back to Freud, religion was considered a symptom.
On the other side, religions can be fearful of psychology. Thinking should overpower feeling. This results in pat answers – just stick to the Bible. Pray it away. Do better.
The problem is that each side needs the other. We can’t fully understand our Creator without also understanding His creation – ourselves.
With knowledge comes understanding.
Human beings were created with the ability to both think and feel. Knowing what your thoughts and emotions are communicating is a vital part of your experience on earth.
Knowing your psychology also directly affects how you relate to God. Do you relate to God like a parent, friend, authority figure? As such, God may be distant, expecting perfection, or unable to be with you in your pain.
It is vital to examine your expectations alongside the Truth. Whatever your level of faith, I invite you to wrestle with your questions and experiences to understand what you believe.
Understanding helps integrate rather than divide.
In modern-day spiritual warfare, the battle is for your mind. Distraction and deception desire to keep you enslaved. But what if you’re being called to freedom?
From a Christian worldview that values the life of Jesus Christ, we can work together in therapy to help you consider the role of faith in your life.
We can respect both your unique psychological makeup and the complexity of the Bible.
Over time, you can gain a greater understanding of how you view relationships. This is vital to know how you relate to yourself, God, and others.
You can begin to experience a greater sense of wholeness as you integrate your identity and faith. You can respond to your call for an abundant life.
It need not be either/or.
Let’s work together to help integrate issues raised in our modern world.
